Level 1 is basic bike handling skills and usually takes place off-road, typically a school playground or park. Typically children are ready for level 1 training from the age of 6. Level 2 is on-road safety skills and usually takes place on quiet residential roads. Cycling in a way so the cyclist can see and be seen clearly, and indicate intent to other road users is the key aim for Level 2. Level 2 training is taught to children from the age of 8. Level 3 is the gold standard for child cyclist training. It will take place on a variety of roads, in a variety of traffic conditions, using a variety of road junctions. Level 3 training starts from age 10, though in most cases younger children will need plenty of cycling practice to gain the required standard. |
