Bikeability Cyclist Training

Bikeability is cycle training for the 21st century. It will give trainees the skills and confidence to cycle on today's roads in modern traffic conditions. Bikeability training is split into three levels.

Two happy young cyclists

Level 1 is basic bike handling skills and usually takes place off-road, typically a school playground or park.  Typically children are ready for level 1 training from the age of 6.

Level 2 is on-road safety skills and usually takes place on quiet residential roads.  Cycling in a way so the cyclist can see and be seen clearly, and indicate intent to other road users is the key aim for Level 2.  Level 2 training is taught to children from the age of 8.

Level 3 is the gold standard for child cyclist training.  It will take place on a variety of roads, in a variety of traffic conditions, using a variety of road junctions.  Level 3 training starts from age 10, though in most cases younger children will need plenty of cycling practice to gain the required standard.
