The National Standard for Cycle Training

The National Standard is the expected competency of the cyclist upon
completion of a training course. Level 3 is covered on busy roads incorporating real traffic conditions
and advanced road features.

To pass Level 3 Bikeability training, pupils should be able to do the following consistently: |

All Level 2 manoeuvres |
3B |
Use roundabouts safely and communicate effectively with other road users |
3C |
Use junctions controlled by traffic lights and communicate effectively with other road users |
3D |
Use multi lane roads and turn left onto them and turn left into a side road |
3E |
Filter and an ability to decide when to filter and when to wait |
3F |
Use both on and off road cycle facilities |
3G |
Risk assess for hazards ahead and have strategies to deal with hazards |
3H |
Plan routes for speed, convenience and safety |
At Lewisham and Greenwich Young Cyclists our Level 3 Bikeability course
goes beyond that required by the National Standard for Cycle Training. In addition to the above, trainees will:

be shown how to make basic repairs to their bike, including fixing a puncture and adjusting brakes; |
- |
cycle after dark, using front and rear lights and evaluate the effectiveness of various types of light; |
- |
be taken on a two day cycle trip involving an overnight stay at a youth hostel. |
