About us

John Ball Cycle Training, the predecessor of Lewisham and Greenwich Young Cyclists won five major awards in its first three years.  John Ball Primary School won the 2006 London Schools Environment Award for its programme of child cyclist training; for two consecutive years, 2007 and 2008, we were the winner of Transport for London’s Cycling Communities Award; we were runner-up in the 2007 London Cycling Campaign’s annual awards; and in the 2008 Smarter Travel Awards we are the overall winner for the Best Cycling Initiative.

Young Lewisham and Greenwich Cyclists was formed to deliver Level 3 Bikeability cycle training to children in the local community.  However, it forms a greater purpose than just cycle training.  It is a complete cycling service for young people and their families.

Bikeability Training:  We are accredited by Cycling England to deliver Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Bikeability Cycle training.  Courses are either after school or during school holidays.  Level 1 training is suitable for children in Year 2 or above; Level 2 training is suitable for children in Year 4 or above; and Level 3 training is suitable for children in Year 6 or above.  Course length varies by size of group, Level 1 training will be between 2 and 4 hours over two sessions; Level 2 training will be between 3 and 6 hours over three sessions, plus a 4 hour cycle ride; Level 3 training is modular in format with ten modules to complete, five of which are assessed.

Family Cycle rides:  Lewisham and Greenwich Young Cyclists organise a number of community cycle rides each term.  These rides are graded easy, moderate, difficult and extreme.  They are suitable for all adults and children of various ages.
