Family Cycle Rides

Graded easy, moderate, difficult and extreme, these rides are suitable for families and young people according to age and experience and also new and returning cyclists. Young people over 13 are welcome to come on rides unaccompanied so long as they have consent of their parent; younger children who have completed Level 2 Bikeability are also welcome unaccompanied. We strongly recommend that young people, unaccompanied by a parent or carer, join our rides with a friend.

Child and parent cycling

Easy

Age guide 5+

Cyclists should be capable of maintaining 6 mph on flat tarmac.

Moderate

Age guide 7+

Cyclists should be capable of maintaining 8 mph on flat tarmac.

Difficult

Age guide 10+

Cyclists should be capable of maintaining 10-12 mph on level roads and cycle up short hills.

Extreme

Age guide 12+

Cyclists should be capable of maintaining 12-15 mph on level roads and be able to cycle up substantial hills.

The ages given are a guideline only. Children as young as five and six years have completed cycle rides of over 30 miles, but we strongly urge parents to bring their child on an age appropriate cycle ride before taking on more of a challenge.

Hills Nearly all our cycle rides include the hill in Greenwich Park, both down and up. Children (and their parents) who cannot manage to cycle up the hill are given the time to push up. Apart from that one hill, easy and moderate rides are flat. Difficult rides may or may not include hills; extreme rides usually include hills, sometimes substantial hills.
Roads Most of our routes are selected because they are free from motor traffic, or on very quiet roads. All might contain very short sections on or crossing very busy sections of road; when we do take young children on busy roads the adults in the group act as a rolling road block around the children. Difficult and extreme rides might include sections on or alongside busy roads.
Care We cycle together as one or more groups at the pace of the slowest rider in each group. No one is ever left alone to make their own way, and we will cut rides short rather than push people too hard. Most mechanical failures can be fixed at the roadside, including punctures, ineffective brakes and even broken chains. However, all bikes should be kept in good working order and worn tyres replaced. We are not a substitute for having your bicycle serviced at a local bike shop.
